The United Kingdom and the United States have concluded a key trade agreement that will preserve no duties on British drug exports being sold in the US market.

Key Provisions of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise spending on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that tariffs on these crucial goods will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This development is in response to earlier warnings to significantly raise duties on patented pharmaceutical products, with potential rates mentioned up to one hundred percent.

"This agreement with the Britain strengthens the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and brings long-overdue fairness to transatlantic medicine commerce," a statement said.

Trade Importance

Medicines constitute one of the UK's biggest export categories to the America, which is clearly the biggest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Trade data show that in the 12 months leading up to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products valued at £11.1bn to the US. This amount accounted for 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This deal secures employment, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a worldwide center for life sciences," a minister stated.

Detailed UK Commitments

The agreement includes several key pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the price threshold at which it judges new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to raise total NHS spending on medicines from 0.3 percent of the national economy to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The amount drug companies must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Previously, refunds topped 20%.

Broader Context

The deal comes amid a long-running row between the sector and the ministers over spending levels and regulatory access.

These tensions were intensified by claims that US patients were paying a premium for the same drugs than patients in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major expansions have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure stated that the NHS had to invest a greater share on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its resources over the past decade.
