Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
