Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
