RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
