Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
