Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
