Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
