Roughly fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the incident made him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
