Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
